The best part of making The Beautiful Dreams series of albums is the moment when the several individual sections are ready enough to be put into one project file and for me to start worrying about section order and transitions between sections.
The making of each piece starts with long-ish improvisations which are then cut-up into smaller loops or sections, though if I'm really happy about an improvised section, I'll just leave it alone and use it as base for the whole thing. Other layers are later added in this way.
Then comes detail work: small edits, usually simultaneous with the mixing process. Polishing and getting rid of artifacts from recording (or making the most of them).
This is the bulk of the process. It's not fast or the easiest way to go about things, but it suits my current situation and the goals I have set for each piece and album.
The only thing I sometimes miss is a greater preocupation with structure. Not because I deem it necessary to workout every section in advance or that the musical aspect requires it (in the specific case of TBD). It just feels like something that would be fun to spend more time on.
The concept of weaving sections together seems like an especially good starting point. Taking the part I love the most and using it at an earlier stage of the process.
That's one idea for the next batch of music.
(This was a lot of writing to myself but maybe can be useful for others. If not, this blog is also an archive, after all).
